Sailing and Michigan just go together like, well, any kind of cliche you can think of really. It helps that both parts of this state are peninsulas and surrounded by the Great Lakes.
It doesn't matter if you're an amateur or a veteran, either--there are sailing opportunities for everyone. Just ask the folks over at Unsalted Sailing, a new company located in Traverse City that will be hosting a flotilla and three sailing events this year.
The events will include stopovers at Mackinac Island, the Les Cheneaux Islands, the Manitou Islands, Beaver Island and a Lake Michigan Crossing. You can join the multitude of sailors that are coming from as far away as New York, California and Texas to enjoy these locations and waterways.
"This is a great opportunity to explore the islands, beaches, towns and harbors of beautiful Northern Michigan with the comfort and safety of sailing with others," says Dave Conrad, owner of Bay Breeze and Unsalted Sailing.
"What makes these Unsalted Sailing events unique is that you have a variety of options to participate. You can join us by chartering a boat, taking an (American Sailing Association) sailing course along the way, booking a cabin on a captained boat, or sailing on your own boat."
By taking a course from these ASA-certified instructors, inexperienced sailors will learn the ropes while enjoying their time on the water. Courses will fit all skill levels from beginners on their first sailing adventure to experienced sailors looking to brush up on techniques.
Events being hosted by Unsalted Sailing include The Straights June 16-21; Lake Michigan July 22-27; the Flotilla Aug. 18-24; and Lake Michigan Crossing Sept. 9-14.
