The famed Short's Brewing Company in Bellaire is taking a step in a new direction.
Head brewer Tony Hansen has a new title on top of his regular beer-making duties: He's now head cider maker for a new imprint,
Starcut Ciders. Its craft ciders first appeared on tap at Short's in 2014, and now, Starcut Cider varieties are being rolled out for statewide distribution on tap at bars, restaurants and taprooms across Michigan.
Like Short's, Starcut focuses on using fruits grown locally in northern Michigan. To meet the challenge of statewide distribution, the cidery has recently increased production, but Hansen says they'll remain true to their local-sourced intent.
"One of my primary motivations to produce Starcut Ciders has always been to use the fruit from our local farms. I want to highlight Northern Michigan as a cider destination, support our neighboring farms, and help preserve Michigan's agricultural landscape that so many of us love," he says.
