Pellston Airport awards $6 million in contracts for upgrades, improvements

Improvements and construction will be starting soon at the Pellston Regional Airport, which was awarded more than $6 million in contracts last week.

The construction contracts were awarded to regional and state companies to build a new facility to house snow removal equipment, aircraft rescue and fire fighting equipment.

Of 19 contracts granted, four were in Emmet County and totaled nearly $2.5 million.

Petoskey-based Ballard's and Great Lakes Plumbing & Heating received the largest contract at $1.053 million for mechanical work while Butcher & Baeker Construction, of Harbor Springs, won two bids that combined for $924,395 for roofing and general trades. Grand Traverse Construction was awarded the highest total dollar amount for two bids for masonry, along with site and building concrete for $1,092,945.

The facility project is expected to cost about $8 million overall and will be paid for mostly with a $5 million Federal Aviation Association grant and supplemented with additional entitlement money from state and federal sources. Emmet County's portion of the project will be $189,000.
