Munson Medical Center gets new wound center in Traverse City

Patients in the Traverse City area no longer have to travel to Alpena, Grand Rapids or even Saginaw to get hyperbaric oxygen treatment for chronic wound care.

Munson Medical Center
has opened an advanced wound center in Traverse City that includes hyperbaric oxygen therapy and other cutting-edge treatments to better care for patients with chronic wounds, such as diabetic ulcers or pressure sores.

Mark Anthony is Munson's senior vice president, and says the new center is a sign of the hospital's commitment to investing in medical technologies that will help patients stay closer to home.

"We're introducing hyperbaric oxygen therapy at the Advanced Wound Center as an exciting treatment option that we believe will benefit many patients in the region," he says. "This center will extend Munson's efforts to provide high quality care to our communities."

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy uses specially designed chambers to provide patients with 100-percent oxygen at two or three times the normal atmospheric pressure. More oxygen is then carried by blood to the wound, which helps the healing process.

Chronic wounds often require a multidisciplinary approach that can be too demanding for a single doctor to provide, so the center emphasizes cooperation between referring physicians, surgeons, podiatrists, and other specialists based on patient needs.
