AMI Industries expands in Gaylord

An automotive manufacturer is expanding in Gaylord with the help of some job training funding provided by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

The city of Gaylord was granted $650,000 in community development block grant funding to train skilled machine operators and process engineers in the Gaylord area. Those skilled workers then are to be employed by AMI Industries, an automotive fabricating company based in Lewiston, which recently has bought a manufacturing facility in Gaylord. It's the company's third location; the other plant is in Sault Ste. Marie.

The facility will create 101 new jobs, 52 of which are to be held by low-income or moderate-income workers, in a total investment of $4 million.

The AMI project was one of four business expansion and community revitalization projects in the state that were given approval through the Michigan Strategic Fund, and are expected to generate a total of $41 million in investments and create 302 new jobs. The others were located in the Charter Township of Orion and Saginaw.
