Two Dow companies to host separate solar competitions

Apparently, the Dow companies are all about cool solar competitions.

Both Dow Solar and Dow Corning have announced that each company will be hosting its own solar competitions this year. Corning will be hosting the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 while Dow Solar launched its Design to Zero Competition.

"Education, research and development, and manufacturing are part of a cycle that allows the United States to compete in a fast-paced global market," says Dow Corning president and CEO Robert Hansen. "Our participation in this year's Solar Decathlon will help fulfill our promise to be an active, involved collaborator with students, researchers, manufacturers, and governments as we prepare the next generation to address the complex problems in our world."

In the Solar Decathlon, which will run from Sept. 23 to Oct. 2 in Washington, D.C., 20 collegiate teams will design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive.

The Dow Solar competition is designed to challenge students to develop innovative projects incorporating active and passive solar technologies, among other sustainable construction-related solutions, to design near-zero energy multi-family dwellings.

The international challenge is open to architecture, design and engineering students and professionals. Registration is open through Sept. 25 and all final housing designs must be submitted by Oct. 31.
