Two Mid Michigan doctors recognized by Michigan State Medical Society

Two mid-Michigan doctors are among those recognized by the Michigan State Medical Society this year for their volunteer work.

In all, twelve physicians across the state were recipients of Michigan State Medical Society Community Service Awards for volunteer efforts including volunteer medical service, overseas missionary work, volunteer health education projects, and other community services.

Gratiot County surgeon Sister Rebecca Koterba, RSM, MD, and Saginaw County neurosurgeon E. Malcolm Field, MD were the mid-Michigan physicians honored by the state society.

Koterba was honored for her work in Haiti, providing surgical and wound care after the 2010 earthquake.

Field was recognized for his commitment to compassionate care for the sick and poor. As well as research, education and prevention work, he and his wife, Lois, have established two chairs at Saginaw Valley State University, encouraging higher education.

Award recipients were nominated by their peers at the county level. The other ten recipients are from Calhoun, Genesee, Kalamazoo, Kent, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

"We are very proud to recognize our physician members in this way," says MSMS President Daniel Michael. "They have taken time out of their busy lives to give back to their communities and they have truly made a difference in the lives of others."

The Michigan State Medical Society is a professional association of 16,000 Michigan physicians, with the mission to work as advocates for patients in the legislative, communications and education arenas. It also operates the Michigan State Medical Society Foundation, which provides grants to non-profits for health-related projects to improve health status and access to care across the state.
