MCC sets world record at inaugural AlphARace

A community effort at the Midland Community Center set a world record recently with the longest distance on a slip 'n' slide. And that wasn't even all--it came at the same time as Midland's first alphARace adventure race event, which brought competitors, volunteers, and plenty of families out to have a good time.

"AlphARace was just a phenomenal event," says Jodi Spiker, health and wellness director for the community center. "There was so much excitement between the Friday night headlamp races, the intensity of some of our champion runners, and people just out to have a good time."

The events were held at Midland City Forest and included adult races, kids races, and of course, thhe world's longest slip 'n' slide. It is expected to break the Guinness World Record for the longest distance, which, although yet unverified, was estimated at 118,200 feet long. That's quite the gain over the previous record holder, the University of Oregon, at 82,080 feet.

About 1,000 people participated in the race weekend, which was sponsored by partners Sound Productions, Runners Shoe Store, Walmart, Great Lakes Emergency Power, Dow Chemical Company, Little Forks Outfitters, Steven's Cycle and Chris Calleja and Memorie Vale.
