Three local businesses have received recognition for their efforts to protect the environment, conserve energy, and reduce their impact on the area's water, land and air.
The three awardees, given the
Michigan Agri-Business Association's 2011 Green Agri-Business Designation, are Star of the West Milling Co. in Frankenmuth, POET Biorefining in Caro, and Crop Production Services, a statewide company with facilities in Munger, Linwood and Henderson in the Bay area.
"The Michigan Agri-Business Association wants to shine a light on the many agricultural businesses that are doing the right thing, and keeping Michigan's natural resources strong and healthy," says MABA president Jim Byrum. "Conservation, sustainability and energy efficiency are a way of life for these Michigan businesses, saving both money and resources. These businesses are good for both our industry and Michigan's future, and we want to highlight their efforts."
They were among several other Michigan businesses receiving the award, which is in its first year and recognizes excellence in sustainable agri-business and commitment to the environment.
Star of the West, a 141-year-old wheat miller, was recognized for its recent investments and upgrades toward sustainability, including a fleet of new fuel-efficient trucks.
POET Biorefining produces ethanol and was recognized for its efficiency improvements, recycling program, and especially its water recovery systems.
Crop Production Services, a major agricultural product and services supplier, was honored for its recycling programs, renewable and fuel-efficient vehicle use, reducing its water usage, planting trees, offering sustainable agri-business solutions, and using low-energy heating, lighting, cooling and drying systems.
