Mid-Michigan was one of several bright spots recognized at this year's
Michigan Downtown Conference.
First, organizers chose downtown
Bay City as the conference location, as an example of what downtown revitalization is all about. Then, as the awards were read, downtown Clare took home not just one, but two honors.
The conference was held at the Doubletree Hotel in Bay City, and honored both communities and individuals active in downtown revitalization projects during 2010.
"Every year, the Michigan Downtown Conference planning partners recognize those projects, communities and individuals who have proved themselves as true leaders in our state," says Michigan State Housing Development Authority's Joe Borgstrom. "This year's award winners are no exception."
The awards were given by various organizations. Among those given by the Michigan Downtown Conference Planning Committee was one for innovation on a small scale, and that went to the
Cops & Doughnuts bakery in Clare.
The story of the bakery is unusual: Clare City Bakery was one of Clare's earliest businesses, opening in 1896, but was a few weeks away from closing its doors. The Clare Police Department's nine members literally came to the rescue, deciding they couldn't let it close. All nine officers chipped in and now are running the bakery themselves. Among the amenities it boasts are handmade baked goods, police-approved coffee, and a "very safe" atmosphere. The store's clever T-shirts, bumper stickers and mugs have found a huge online following, besides.
Clare's second award was to an individual, as the Michigan Main Street Center chose Lori Schuh of
Main Street Clare as their Manager of the Year.
