The only thing more numerous at the Cops and Doughnuts bakery in Clare than the sweet treats is going to be the amount of awards on the wall.
The bakery, which is owned by nine Clare police officers who bought the location when it nearly closed two years ago, was awarded the Michigan Municipal League's Region 4 Community Excellence Award earlier this month.
The downtown bakery, which has received nation-wide media attention and a slew of accolades over the past two years, sent Office Greg Rynearson to accept the award.
"When we purchased the bakery because it was going to close, we did it for the city," Rynearson says. "So this Community Excellence Award has special meaning to us because it actually comes from an organization that the city belongs to."
The League's Region 4 covers the central part of the state and includes the counties of Arenac, Bay, Clare, Clinton, Baldwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Midland, Saginaw and Shiawassee.
Clare will now go on to compete for the statewide CEA honor against the winners of the other six regions during the League's Annual Convention, Oct. 4-7, in Grand Rapids.
