CMU incubates businesses, job growth

When it comes to job creation, it looks like the place in Mount Pleasant that deserves a round of applause is the Central Michigan University Research Corp.

Now in its 12th year of advancing economic development in the region, the CMU Research Corp helped create 85 jobs in 2011, as noted by the organization's president and CEO, Erin Strang, who noted they are currently helping out 21 companies.

"As a State of Michigan SmartZone, CMU-RC harnesses the intellectual and technological capital from CMU to assist entrepreneurs in launching successful businesses," says Strang. "Our mission is to serve as an incubator for businesses in their early developmental stages and then migrate them into the community once they have a solid foundation."

CMU-RC provides assistance to entrepreneurs and companies that have high growth potential. The company must have some type of intellectual property, innovative technology or service. Current businesses range from alternative energy, advanced manufacturing and life sciences to homeland security and defense.

In addition to accessing the university’s intellectual and technological resources, CMU-RC also provides business acceleration and support, physical space for operations and connections for businesses.
