CMU hires new vice president of enrollment

A new administrative position is being added at Central Michigan University to deal with enrollment. The post, as VP for enrollment and student services, will be filled by Steven Johnson, who was appointed after a national search process and will start the job as of January.

"This position is critical to our university as we address the declining number of high school graduates," says CMU president George Ross. "Not only must we compete for the best and brightest students, but we must be innovative in our approach to setting tuition, financial aid, and creating the best academic environment for our students to enhance retention and ensure their success."

Johnson currently is the associate VP for enrollment management at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He's also previously worked in management positions at Pace University, Davenport University, and CMU, where he was the director of operations and professional development for off-campus programs from 1997 to 2000.

His duties as VP of enrollment and student services will include leading the school's enrollment management efforts, improving recruitment, retention and graduation rates, overseeing tuition and financial aid planning, innovating and implementing best practices in undergraduate recruiting, and marketing for graduate and nontraditional students.

"It is my privilege to be able to return to CMU and have the opportunity to work with members of the University community in achieving strategic enrollment goals while enhancing the student experience," says Johnson. "As the societal landscape changes, it is critical for colleges and universities to have a strategy to guide their efforts.  I look forward to leading CMU's work in this area."
