Breast health program expands to Alma

Women in the Alma and surrounding communities now have better access to health care resources for breast health.

The MidMichigan Medical Center - Gratiot is expanding their successful Breast Health Program and its comprehensive approach to breast cancer prevention, screening and treatment, to Alma.

"The program will be similar to the Breast Health Program already established at MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland, which is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers," says Joan Herbert, director of oncology services at MidMichigan Health.

Melissa Hoag, RN, will serve as a navigator to help local women get through the breast cancer treatment process, keeping patients and their families informed, and helping to provide counseling and scheduling. MidMichigan Health is bringing in the same advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment it offers in Midland, including digital mammography, breast MRI and stereotactic biopsy.

After cancer treatment, the care isn't over; breast cancer survivors also are part of a follow-up program. Genetic counseling programs and testing also are available to women who are at risk for hereditary cancers.

MidMichigan Health offers medical centers in Alma, Clare, Gladwin and Midland and serves 14 Michigan counties with a range of health services.
