Saginaw will be one of five Michigan cities getting in on the latest round of federal funding to improve blighted areas.
Of the $100 million coming to Michigan to fight blight, Saginaw will get about $11.2 million. The money has to go to large-scale projects that will stabilize neighborhoods, increase or preserve property values, and fight crime.
The projects will take place under an ongoing effort from the
Michigan State Housing Development Authority to combat blight in Michigan, called Step Forward Michigan.
Demolition work to take down abandoned buildings will start this fall in each city.
Detroit will get more than half the funds, $52.3 million; Flint, Grand Rapids and Pontiac are the other three, with Flint getting $20.1 million, Grand Rapids getting $2.5 million and Pontiac $3.7 million. Another $10.2 million is being held by the state to go to properties that may become eligible for demolition during the funding period, or to meet unanticipated project costs.
