When the fall semester starts up at the end of this month, there will be more green news coming out of Saginaw Valley State University.
Two Bay City sisters -- Julie and Lisa Luce -- recently received a $1,500 grant from
SVSU's
Student Research and Creativity Institute to launch the Green News Network at the university. The two professional and technical writing majors will be reporting and writing about all the environmental news and initiatives coming out of SVSU.
"We've always been interested in the environment," Lisa Luce says. "And we've always liked writing."
The grant will be used to purchase video equipment, a tripod, and tools needed to build a website where the sisters will post environmental news in a multimedia format. The sisters also hope to hire about three other students to help report the news for the site.
The two sisters, along with Bill Williamson -- associate professor of English -- came up with the idea for the Green News Network. The project eventually may become a permanent digital journalism class at SVSU, and a way to teach students about using multimedia tools to report on the news.
With their reporting project, the Luce sisters say they hope to inform SVSU students about all the environment initiatives happening at university. They also hope to write stories telling students about things that they can do as individuals to help the environment.
"We just hope to get a lot more people interested and involved in being green at Saginaw Valley," Lisa Luce says. "There's much more to being green than simply recycling. There are a lot of opportunities to be involved on campus."
Beyond educating others, the sisters hope to educate themselves.
"Personally, we're hoping to expand our skills in digital journalism," Lisa Luce says.
