Mid-Michigan Medical Center gets new da Vinci surgical system

High-tech surgery is almost a given at many hospitals nowadays, but the latest surgical equipment to arrive at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland gives "high-tech" a whole new meaning.

The center just welcomed the arrival of a da Vinci Si Surgical System, which is an advanced robotic surgery system that lets a surgeon control ever more complex and delicate procedures, like tiny incisions and maneuvers with fingertip and touch controls.

The benefits are many, says Greg Rogers, president of MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland.

"MidMichigan is committed to offering cutting edge technology supported by physician expertise by being the only provider in the region to offer the latest version of the da Vinci," says Rogers. "This robotic system actually extends our surgeon's skills; it does not replace them. Our patients will benefit from smaller incisions, less pain, lower risk of infection, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and less scarring."

Some of the features on the new system includes enhanced 3D visuals, high-definition images of the operating field, widescreen touch screen, more nimble controls, adjustable console to fit different surgeons' needs, and constant safety checks.

MidMichigan is also one of just six health care providers in the state, and the only one in the region, to offer simulation training on the da Vinci system to its physicians, who can practice mastering the use of the robotic surgical system.

The center now uses the system for gynecologic and urologic surgeries, but more uses will become available in the next year.
