PHOTOS: What do people love about Dearborn?


The fifth annual Art in the Park was held last weekend in West Dearborn, with vendors, artists, and local farmers coming together for an afternoon as summer winds down. On the Ground Dearborn was there to check in with the community to see what stands out the most to people who live, work and play in the city. Here’s what they had to say.

Name: Stacy Mick, 33

Background: Stacy has lived in Dearborn since 2009.

Favorite part of Dearborn: “My kids love the pools and the parks. I love the restaurants.


Name: Stephanie O'Dell, 43

Background: Stephanie grew up in Dearborn and graduated from Edsel Ford in 1992. She calls Dearborn Heights home now.
Favorite part of Dearborn: “What I love about the community is the diversity in it. I love that you can feel so at home. I’ve always been comfortable here.”



Name: Tamara Almond, late 30s

Background: Tamara has worked in Dearborn for five years as a community coordinator for Services to Enhance Potential. She was passing out zucchini samples for Pop club sponsored by Beaumont.

Favorite part of Dearborn: “It seems to me like Dearborn is happening a lot more lately. There's a lot of new developments going on. There's a lot of nonprofit organizations we get to deal with. It's the type of community that comes together on a lot of things. They host a lot of events, too. It's cool.”

 


Name: Hussein Saab, 31

Background: Hussein grew up in East Dearborn and his whole family still lives here. He visits often.

Favorite part of Dearborn: “I love the welcoming culture and the diversity and the delicious food everything. It's pretty awesome.


 

Name: Mattie Biggs, 52

Background: Mattie is a West Dearborn resident whose family has been in the city for more than 60 years.

Favorite part of Dearborn: “I love that it's very friendly and lots of things are located really close. And it's fun. You can come out and walk, there's lots of shopping and food. The fourth Friday concerts and the Jazz on the Avenue, I do get out and do a lot of these things. Om Ppa is one of my favorite spots, too, I’ve been going there since they opened their doors.”

 


Name: Jean Smith, 48

Background: Jean has been the events director for West Dearborn’s Downtown Development Authority since March. She’s a Westland resident.

Favorite part of Dearborn: “We love to come and patron the different restaurants. We love Bailey’s and Bar Louie. Mint 29 is such a beautiful new establishment. I love Village Frame Shop, Famous Hamburgers, Brome Burgers, yes. I love these places. The market is my favorite part though, that's where my heart is.”



Name: Natalie Arguello, 24

Background: Natalie grew up in Miami and now works at Ford Motor Company as a research engineer.
Favorite part of Dearborn: “I'm a big fan of Michigan Avenue, the shops they have great customer service. The owners say hi and talk to you and that always makes it a good day.”



Name: Sabrina Luzia, 29

Background: Sabrina is a Detroit resident who is one of the founding artists of Dearborn’s Painting with a Twist, which opened in March 2016.

Favorite part of Dearborn: “I like the downtown area. It's really close-knit and everyone knows everyone in Dearborn. No matter where we go we know somebody in Dearborn. You don't really get that in Detroit because it’s so big and that's what I really love.”




Name: Tom Flaggerty, 67

Background: Tom has lived here his whole life.
Favorite part of Dearborn: “I love the view out of my tenth-floor apartment, I can see all of downtown Detroit. God bless Orville Hubbard, the city wouldn't be this nice if it weren't for so many years of him being mayor. I love the clean streets. There's Ford Motor Company that helps make Dearborn what it is, even more than Hubbard, as you can see from the (Wagner development).”


Name: Mike Magnone

Background: Mike is a board member of the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce. He was born and raised in Dearborn and his family still lives in the city.
Favorite part of Dearborn: “It’s a diverse city and it’s growing now. I spent a lot of time with the Chamber so I see a whole different side than what other people see. My favorite stop is Common Grace Coffee.
