A Dearborn cultural institution is rallying around its community, celebrating the life and work of one of its very own.
The Dearborn artist, teacher, and photographer Teresa Louisas passed away Dec. 5, 2018. The Dearborn Community Arts Council will honor Louisas with the introduction of the Teresa Louisas Memorial Award, which will be given out at the 24th Annual Juried Photography Exhibition at Dearborn’s Padzieski Art Gallery.
The Feb. 1 event marks the official start of the DCAC’s 2019 season.
The annual exhibition judges an open call of photographers’ submissions. This year’s exhibition has been dedicated to Louisas, herself a member of the DCAC. The winner of the Teresa Lousias Memorial Award will receive a $100 cash prize and ProCam gift card for Best of Show. Additional prizes include $50 cash prizes and ProCam gift cards in the Color, Black & White, and Digitally Altered categories.
Louisas’s own work will also be on display at the exhibition, which will also serve as a fundraiser for future awards in her name.
The 24th Annual Juried Photography Exhibition is free and open to the public. It’s scheduled for Friday, Feb. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dearborn’s Padzieski Art Gallery.
A memorial gathering, also free and open to the public, is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2, from noon to 2 p.m., which is also at the Padzieski Art Gallery.
The exhibition will be on display all month long, wrapping up on Thursday, Feb. 28 with Paczki at the Padzieski. The closing event features talks from the winning photographers, polish food, and beverages.
The non-profit Dearborn Community Arts Council has supported the arts and cultural community of Dearborn since 1969. Its Padzieski Art Gallery is located in the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center.
