On Friday, Oct. 4, manufacturers across the nation will celebrate Manufacturing Day, a nationwide outreach program designed to introduce students to the advantages of a career in manufacturing. The idea is to combat common misconceptions of manufacturing, a field that has become more high-tech than many realize.
As dozens of local manufacturers across metro Detroit invite local high school students on to the factory floor, Lawrence Technological University and the City of Southfield will celebrate the grand opening of a state-of-the-art manufacturing business accelerator on that school’s campus.
The Centrepolis Accelerator is a 6,300 sq. ft. facility designed to foster the development of southeastern Michigan’s advanced manufacturers, innovative hardware entrepreneurs, and small manufacturers.
The accelerator provides access to funding, experts, and key business and product development resources. Physical product developers and manufacturing companies can utilize onsite laboratories and equipment for digital product design and prototyping, virtual reality and mixed reality labs, office space, co-working space, workshops, mentors, and business planning services.
"The new Centrepolis Accelerator is a valuable tool and asset for not only the city of Southfield but the entire state of Michigan," says Southfield Mayor Kenson Siver.
"From helping small businesses and startups grow to retaining talent in the region, this unique and innovative resource will serve us, our partners, and aspiring entrepreneurs well."
The Centrepolis Accelerator receives grant support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, The Michigan Energy Office, and the New Economy Initiative.
Following an invitation-only opening ceremony at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 is a public open house from noon to 4 p.m. The open house, which is free and open to the public, includes a buffet luncheon, tours, and networking opportunities. Registration is available online.
The Centrepolis Accelerator is located in LTU’s Enterprise Center at 21415 Civic Center Dr. in Southfield.
