MPPS ensures no child goes hungry, serving over 82,000 free meals this summer

What’s Happening: Over the summer, Mt. Pleasant Public Schools (MPPS) continued its commitment to providing healthy food to students—even when school wasn’t in session. The MPPS Summer Food Service Program provided more than 82,000 free meals to students and families in the community in June, July, and August.

By the Numbers: The MPPS Summer Food Service Program served 41,166 free breakfasts to students and their families and 41,628 free lunches. Nearly 90% of the total 82,794 meals were distributed at Mt. Pleasant High School, where every Wednesday, families drove to pick up seven days’ worth of breakfasts and lunches.

Free dine-in breakfast and lunch meals were also served over the summer on weekdays both at Ganiard Elementary and Vowles Elementary.

What They’re Saying: “Mount Pleasant Public Schools is pleased to continue to provide meals to our students even when they’re not in class so they get the nutrition they need to stay healthy and enjoy the summer,” MPPS superintendent, Jennifer Verleger, says.

“We’re committed to doing everything we can to ensure that no child is hungry and every student can thrive both in school and outside of the classroom.”

What’s Next: For the current academic calendar year, MPPS students are continuing to receive free breakfasts and lunches in school. While every student is eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch in school, MPPS encourages families to fill out an education benefits form at www.mtpleasantschools.net (it is under the Menu tab entitled “Breakfast & Lunch Program”) to ensure that their school receives full funding for programs that benefit students.
