Every year around Giving Tuesday, the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation receives calls from people asking how they can help the community. With the pandemic impacting the ability of people to give financially or feel comfortable volunteering, Amanda Schafer, Executive Director of the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation, says they wanted to find a way to help people easily give back.
From that inspiration, the #Unselfie photo contest was born: take a photo of yourself wearing a mask and upload it to the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation website for the chance to win a $100 gift card to spend at a local business.
“It’s a selfie but for unselfish reasons. It trends a lot on Giving Tuesday,” says Schafer. “It’s a way of showing you’re being unselfish during the giving season; and, we thought, ‘What better way to be unselfish than to show yourself wearing a mask?’”
Participants must be at least 18 years old to win and live in Isabella County. The contest runs through Nov. 23, after which 10 names will be drawn to win a $100 gift card to a local business.
“The #Unselfie is our attempt to encourage people to do something for one another and signifies our commitment to our community… The whole idea is to keep our schools open, keep our businesses open, and keep the community open,” says Schafer. “Normally, the Community Foundation doesn’t give to local businesses – we’re a charity – but this is something else we can do for the community.”
