Worthy Health & Fitness is recognizing a milestone this week, celebrating 10 years in business serving the Mt. Pleasant community.
Owners Jeremy and Susie Worthington didn't originally set out to open a gym. In 2010, the newly-married couple were recent graduates from Central Michigan University with degrees in mechanical engineering and early childhood education. Jeremy received an entry-level job in engineering and Susie began work as a teacher. After two years of working over 12 hours a day, Jeremy says he realized he needed to make a change.
“I knew growing up that I loved training and helping people,” Jeremy says. “The weight room was something I always gravitated to because it did big things for me in life, through sports and confidence.”
Jeremy obtained his CrossFit certification and was planning to train clients in his garage. Harriet White, Jeremy's brother-in-law's 79-year-old neighbor, heard that Jeremy was into CrossFit, too, and offered to be an initial capital backer.
“She saw the positives of what CrossFit has brought to her and her health, so she wanted to bring CrossFit to her community,” Jeremy says. “We started as small as we could and, 10 years later now, here we are.”
Susie taught for another year and a half before joining Jeremy in the business, a move that allows the couple to spend more time together.
As part of its mission to "help ordinary people do extraordinary things," the gym offers CrossFit-based group training, personal training, and nutrition coaching that accommodates everyone's needs and interests.
“You don’t have to get fit first before you come in here because everybody started somewhere,” Jeremy says. “We’re more excited that you’re joining us and you’re thinking of goals that you’re going towards because everybody here is doing that.”
A family-friendly celebration is planned at Worthy Health & Fitness in recognition of its 10th anniversary. The event will be held on Saturday, March 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the gym, located at 3711 S. Isabella Road. Suite A.
