Thriftmas shopping: A budget-friendly way to spread Christmas cheer

Once considered a niche hobby, thrifting has surged in popularity—fueled by economic concerns, a growing interest in sustainability, and the thrill of finding one-of-a-kind treasures.

Gen Z and Millennials are leading the charge of thrift shopping’s renaissance in recent years. According to a report by ThredUp, an online thrift marketplace, secondhand shopping is expected to grow 127% by 2026.

The trend aligns with shifting consumer values, including a desire to reduce waste and save money.

Shoppers can save 50% to 80% on items by buying secondhand. A vintage scarf that might cost $40 at a boutique could be found for less than $5 at a thrift store, and holiday decorations like wreaths and ornaments often cost just a few dollars.

“Thrift shopping not only saves money but also helps the environment," says Grace Sponseller-Young, owner of Gracelyn’s Goodies Thrift Boutique & Consignment in Shepherd. "It's like treasure hunting. You save money, find treasures and keep things out of landfills.”

The Mt. Pleasant area has several local thrift stores for shoppers to scour for deals—including these six thrift shops.

Gracelyn’s Goodies accepts donations of gently used clothing and home goods on consignment. The shop is filled to the brim with the latest styles displayed like top-fashion department stores. Inventory is a collection of consigned merchandise, along with items personally curated by Sponseller-Young and some handmade goodies from local vendors. Finds on unique merchandise makes this store a thrifters delight.

Shopper tip: Note the store hours being closed Monday and Tuesday. Recently moving to the current location has expanded space and allowed room to offer men’s apparel and children’s clothing, too.

  3. Come prepared with a list of items you’re shopping for so it’s not overwhelming.
  4. Check store hours: some stores have limited hours and not open certain days of the week.
  5. Be open-minded: Flexibility can lead to unexpected gems.
  6. Look for discounts: Many stores offer special deals on certain days of the week.

  • Books: Dust the pages and covers gently.
  • Plush Toys: Machine-wash on a gentle cycle or spot clean with soapy water.
