Art Reach to showcase all-female exhibit in honor of 100 years of women’s suffrage

Art Reach of Mid Michigan has determined which artists they will feature in their upcoming show, the Women’s Centennial Celebration Juried Exhibit — an exhibit meant to celebrate the 19th amendment’s ratification by showcasing 20 pieces of art made by women and about women.

“Many artists addressed the suffrage movement and celebrated the 19th amendment. Others touch on subject matter related to empowerment, equal rights, living up to unrealistic standards, as well as notable women throughout history,” says Kim Bigard, administrative coordinator at Art Reach of Mid Michigan.

Fourteen women were selected to have their pieces — ranging from paintings to photographs to 3-D installations — shown in the exhibit which runs during Women’s History Month from March 4 to March 28.

Art reach of Mid Michigan will host an artists’ reception for the exhibit on March 18 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. The free event will feature representatives from local women’s organizations, and two artists will be announced as the winners of the Best in Show and Honorable Mention awards.

“Art Reach strives to provide avenues for artistic expression to everyone,” says Bigard. “We hoped to take advantage of the centennial celebration to help open a dialogue and display art that celebrates women and their contributions to the arts.”
