Bicyclists learning cyclo-cross for autumn recreation

Cyclists tend to put their bikes away once the weather starts to cool off in fall. But a growing sport is changing that, reports the Battle Creek Enquirer.

Cyclo-cross offers a work out that can done nearly year-round, enthusiasts say. A Cyclo-Cross race involves doing several laps around a 1.5- to 2-mile course that features pavement lanes, wooded trails, grass areas, stairs, steep hills and obstacles such as water areas and blockades. Competitors ride and carry their bikes on different parts of the course.

“It does take some coordination, and my age — 48 — it’s a bit more challenging, but I love doing it. It’s intense, and it’s a great way to get a workout in a short amount of time,”  said Paddi Thornburg of Athens.
