As Cornerstone Alliance looks ahead to 2011 and its many projects and programs the list is long.

So is its list of accomplishments for 2010. From business retention, to helping with housing programs, to a national media blitz for the opening of the golf course at Harbor Shores it was a busy year for the economic development organization serving the southwest corner of Michigan.

Details on the work done in 2010 and the look ahead to 2011 were presented Dec. 8 in a meeting for Cornerstone Alliance investors in a report of measurable actions taken by the group.

Next year, one program the alliance will pursue is its work to develop and rehabilitate 150 homes. In 2011, plans include construction of 36 townhomes in conjunction with the Hope VI project. Sale of four lots and construction of two homes also are in the plans.

Cornerstone will work with MSHDA and the City of Benton Harbor, using Neighborhood Stabilization funds, to develop the firestation at 372 E. Empire into a six-unit apartment complex. The project is intended for the chronically homeless.

Another project is planned at 80 W. Main and 170 E. Wall that will be undertaken with the help of a private investor or developed by Cornerstone Alliance.

In the year ahead, the alliance also will assist the Boys & Girls Club with the construction of its new headquarters and teen center. A 30,000-square-foot facility will be located next to the Benton Harbor Housing Commission and a 15,000-square-foot facility will be near Benton Harbor High School.

Throughout the year Cornerstone Alliance also will work to expand awareness of a rent subsidy program for businesses in three service areas.
