Job seekers invited to major career fair at WMU

Engineering, technology, education, healthcare, human services, manufacturing, financial services, aviation, transportation, construction, environmental sciences, retail, consumer products, and the government and nonprofit sectors all will be represented at an upcoming career fair on Western Michigan University’s campus.

The annual career fair will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13 in the Bernhard Center Ballroom. It is anticipated 175 employers will participate. Some employers may conduct first-round interviews Friday, Feb. 14. Many employers will ask qualified candidates to complete an online employment application in lieu of submitting a paper resume.

The event is open to the public, though it is geared toward WMU students and alumni. Job seekers from all fields are encouraged to attend. The career fair is organized by WMU’s Career and Student Employment Services and is expected to attract about 2,500 job seekers.

Those attending are encouraged to research employers in advance, dress professionally, and bring copies of an updated resume.

For WMU students, there will be a preparation room where they can practice their “personal commercial” with a career coach. They also will be offered advice on professional dress and effective communication with employers.

“Many recruiters will be offering internships, so we encourage all students to visit the Career Fair even though they might not be looking for full-time employment yet,” says Buffy Nespodzany, event co-chair and WMU assistant director for employer relations and development. “Attending the Career Fair will also be a great opportunity for students and faculty to do some networking.”

WMU students are asked to bring their Bronco identification.
