Art Spot program to bring public murals to Old Town

Old Town has been known as Lansing’s arts and culture district for years because of the concentration of creative businesses and individuals who call the neighborhood their home. Soon, however, visitors won’t have to look all the way inside the historic storefronts to see just how artsy Old Town truly is. Thanks to the Old Town Commercial Association’s new outdoor mural program, Art Spot, the evidence will literally be written on the walls.

“We are very lucky to have so many wonderful galleries showcasing work of artists of different types and backgrounds,” says Brittney Hoszkiw, OTCA Executive Director. “We hope that a series of murals will take that experience outdoors to an ally that is used regularly by residents and visitors alike.”

The OCTA kicked of the program with a $2,700 grant from the Capital Area Community Foundation, will pay the artists for their contribution. Proposals from artists are now being accepted until September 30.

“I’m hoping to see different interpretations of community and celebration and connectivity,” says Hoszkiw. “all the things that we strive to be here in Old Town.”

The three pilot locations for the program will be The Wild Rose Café, Swanson Design and the former Greenfield Collection.

“What is typically a shortcut or means of getting around the neighborhood will turn into another experience,” Hoszkiw.

Art Spot is just the beginning for public are in Old Town. The OCTA hopes future fundraising and support will lead to go towards signage, lighting and pavers in unpaved areas.
