Up to 10,000 visitors expected to celebrate Girl Scouts' 100th anniversary in Downtown

Somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 Girl Scouts and their families will visit Downtown Lansing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting. Although many celebrations will take place throughout Michigan on or around the March 12 celebration, the Lansing event is expected to draw the largest number of attendees.

“We have been working for two years to partner with businesses and organizations in Lansing to showcase Lansing as a destination,” says Shayne Wheeler, Communications Team Leader for Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan.

Girl Scouting has been an integral part of the local community since the Lansing Girl Scouts received their charter in 1927. Approximately 4,000 Girl Scouts and 1,000 adult volunteers participate in the Lansing region. Twelve staffers are employed at the Turner Street offices of Girl Scout Heart of Michigan in Old Town, and the organization’s two-to-three annual events draw up to 3,000 visitors to Lansing on each occasion.

“Girl [Scouts] decide how to use the funds they raise from the cookie program and many of them use their earnings to fund community service projects in Lansing,” says Wheeler.

The Girl Scout Heart of Michigan celebration will take place on March 10 and will include a parade, sing-along, the ribbon cutting on the new Girl Scouts’ 100th Anniversary Exhibit at the Michigan Historical Museum, and fireworks at Cooley Law School Stadium.
