East Lansing residents who paid the extra $10 for a “Recreation Passport” when renewing their license plates in the last year are about to see the tangible results of their investment.
The City of East Lansing was chosen to receive a $20,000 Recreation Passport Grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to be used for improvements at Henry Fine Park.
“We knew we had projects that met the criteria for the grant,” says East Lansing Department of Parks, Recreation & Arts Director Tim McCaffrey, “so we submitted the Henry Fine Park playground replacement project for consideration.”
The East Lansing project is one of 24 in Michigan communities to receive the grant. Work on the design phase of the Henry Fine Park project will begin immediately, and construction is planned for summer 2012. Plans include remove and replace the existing tot lot play structure and improvements to the adjacent parking lot of the park.
“The existing playground is outdated and needed either significant repair or replacement,” says McCaffrey. “It is a priority of the City of East Lansing to ensure that our existing parks and facilities are appropriately maintained for our community.”
The $20,000 grant will cover approximately 50 percent of the estimated $40,000 cost of the playground structure.
