The
USDA Forest Service has leased office space from Michigan State University for decades. The two organizations work together closely, and Research Meteorologist/Director's Representative Dr. Warren E. Heilman doesn't expect that to change when the USDA moves to the University Corporate Research Park on Collins Road later this year.
"The nice thing is we're basically across the street from campus, so we'll be able to maintain as much connection to MSU as possible," says Heilman. "The amenities in the building will basically allow us to continue to do what we have been doing on campus."
The USDA has leased 6,695 square feet of space, a larger location then their current, which will allow the organization to condense materials stored in an off-site facility into their office.
The office will be the new home of the USDA Forest Service-Northern Research Station, which conducts research within a 20-state region from Maine to Minnesota and from Missouri to Maryland. The organization aims to improve lives and help sustain natural resources. The office employs 12 permanent Forest Service scientists and support staff, as well as five to eight MSU students or visiting researchers at any given time.
