Okemos Meijer gets $7.5M makeover, new drive-thru

Patrons of the Okemos branch of Meijer have been noticing some changes in the store recently, and there are more on the way. The entire 196,000 square foot building has been under renovation since January, and nearly every part of the store will be affected.

“Pretty much everything is on time with the project,” says Meijer public relations manager, David Peterson. “The fashion area is complete, as is hardware, the home areas and automotive area. They are getting ready to start some of the outside work now.”

Major elements of the approximately $7.5 million renovation include moving the pharmacy and bottle return areas to the front of the store and adding a drive through to the pharmacy.

“They’re moving the pharmacy to the other side of the store and are adding the ability to drive through,” says Peterson. “It was over in the grocery area, and it is being moved over to the general merchandise side so people can come in and get their merchandise quickly.”

Smaller changes will still have a big impact for Meijer. The installation of new coolers with motion-activated, LED lights will save energy with more efficient technology and the ability to power off when no customers are walking down the aisles.

All renovations are scheduled to be completed by late summer. The Okemos location is one of seven Meijer stores company-wide to receive renovations this year.
