Battle Creek is two years into a plan to transform its downtown and a meeting to update the community on how it all is proceeding is in the works.

The presentation is 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at Burnham Brook, 200 W. Michigan Ave., in downtown Battle Creek.

Speakers will each provide an update on the transformation’s four main goals — the rise of the area’s food science industry, Kellogg’s commitment to Battle Creek, integrated education and creation of a strong downtown infrastructure.

• Battle Creek Unlimited representatives Karl Dehn and Jim Hettinger will provide an overall look at the Downtown Transformation’s progress at the two year mark.

•  Stephen Benoit, board member for the Global Food Protection Institute (GFPI) and International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI), will address the success of the growing food science and protection industry based in downtown Battle Creek.

• Susan Buckham of Covance will provide a look at the new facility and its goals for industry leadership and regional jobs.

• Battle Creek Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Linda Hicks will give an update on the Battle Creek Area Math and Science Center.

During the second half of the forum the audience will have an opportunity to offer feedback on the proposals. Attendees are encouraged to show up early to look over displays. Refreshments also will be available.

Project 20/20 representatives will facilitate small discussion groups to solicit ideas, feedback and understanding about the next steps of the five-year Downtown Transformation plan.

Battle Creek Unlimited is the economic development organization that works with the City of Battle Creek to transform and diversify the area’s economy.

Project 20/20 champions ideas and initiatives that move Battle Creek toward excellence.
