Two area entrepreneurs are doubling down on the old Barney’s Bakery, reviving a Bay City classic that closed earlier this summer after more than 90 years in business.
Sierra King and Jarrid Weighman are partnering to reopen the business, albeit in a slightly different form, running not one but two distinct businesses out of the storefront.
The location will reopen as a bakery, with each King and Weighman running their confection operations out of the Van Buren Street kitchen.
King’s surname is no doubt familiar to many a Michigander. The King family owns the Bay City-based Outdoor Adventures camping company, which has nine locations across the state.
King plans to use the bakery to mass-produce a line of specialty cookies that will be sold at Outdoor Adventures locations in Michigan and its affiliated properties in Ohio and New York.
Sierra King bought Barney's Bakery in September to produce specialty cookies. She then invited fellow baker Jarrid Weighman to operate his own bakery out of the storefront too."Our campers are going to love that we’ll also have the old school, silver Airstream trailers at our resorts to serve my signature cookies and also other specialty items like ice cream and coffee," says King, who purchased Barney’s Bakery in late September.
King invited Saginaw native Jarrid Weighman to run his own bakery business out of the old storefront, which first opened in 1929.
Weighman has been running his own on-demand, home-based BakeHouse Bakery since 2013. He has combined the name of Barney’s and his own bakery for the new venture, reflecting his combining the classic Barney’s menu with his own.
"You’ll recognize some Barney favorites like donuts and bread along with all of my signature specialty items, including cut-out cookies covered in buttercream frosting, cheesecakes, quiche, and more," says Weighman.
"I look forward to using all of my equipment in the new location to help you celebrate life’s sweetest moments with custom sweet treats."
Barney’s BakeHouse Bakery is located at 421 S. Van Buren St. in Bay City.
