Vicki’s Family Diner brings 5 new jobs to Douglas

When Vicki’s Family Diner opened its doors March 28 hungry patrons immediately descended on it, coming in for daily breakfasts and lunches, and even the dinner entrees served Wednesdays through Fridays.

It meant five new jobs in Douglas with more on the horizon.

“We plan to add four or five more,” says Ron Beisel, who co-owns with his wife and the eatery’s namesake, Vicki. “We’re going to need more cooks and servers in the next month.”

Business started out strong and has accelerated since, says Beisel, who has quite the Saugatuck following as well as people who drive from Douglas, Hamilton, Holland and Glen to enjoy a meal at Vicki’s.

Beisel is proud of the way food looks when it comes out of the kitchen, though the food is reasonably priced. The average cost of a meal ranges from $7 to $11 a plate.

Biscuits smothered in gravy and omelets are breakfast favorites. And dinner delights include ribs and the Pollack and bluegill they serve during fish fries.

“A lot of restaurants serve perch instead of bluegill,” Beisel says. “And our gizzards — well, our customers tell us they are the best gizzards they’ve ever had. My grandmother taught me how to make them.”

A gluten-free menu selection includes bread and pancakes and there is a variety of work — photography, ink drawings and more — from local artists adorning the walls for purchase.

“There are no other ‘Mom and Pop’ restaurants around anymore,” Beisel says. “We’re family-owned and operated. And we really care about our customers. That’s just how we roll.”
