Christman Company Completes $12 Million Renovation of Downtown Lansing Icon

After putting $12 million into what was once known as the Lansing Mutual Building, the Christman Company has earned the right to rename one of Lansing’s most iconic structures “The Christman Building.”

The Christman Company was careful to keep the restoration of the 1928 building in line with its historic features, including putting Pewabic tile in the main stairway, installing steel stair railings with verdigris bronze finish and repairing restored exterior limestone detailing.

The Christman Company also added an art deco edifice and three-story skylight to the six-story building.

“It’s one thing to say you’re committed to downtown revitalization and urban renewal, to historic preservation and environmentally-friendly building practices,” says Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.

“But when you see a company like Christman, a major downtown anchor for the last 80 years, put its money, skills and passion where its mouth is and come up with something this incredible, right here in downtown Lansing, you know it will inspire other businesses to move or remain here in the rapidly rejuvenating core of our city.”

The Christman Company has moved its headquarters to the new 60,000 square foot Christman Building. The Kelley Cawthorne lobbying firm and the Michigan Municipal League also have offices in the building.
