$300,000 Renovation of Lansing Community College Gym Nearly Complete

As soon as covers are put on the scoreboard, Lansing Community College’s (LCC) $300,000 renovation of its 7,000 to 8,000 square foot Gannon Gym will be complete.

Fitness classes and varsity sports teams have already used the gym, which was out of commission from May through August.

“We feel a lot like it’s Christmas,” says Lynn Savage, chairperson of Physical Fitness and Wellness for LCC.

The gym hasn’t been updated since the 70s, so many of the renovations addressed safety and lighting concerns.

Renovations included fixing floor dead spots, refinishing the floors, building new bleachers, clearing the vents, updating the gym’s aesthetics, installing wireless capabilities and updating the equipment. The gym is now up to new NCAA standards, so high schools can use the gym for tournaments.

“One obvious improvement is health and safety,” says Bill Turowski, director of operations and media services. “It’s also a more pleasing atmosphere.”

The renovations also improve the building’s energy efficiency. The new lights are slated to reduce the gym’s electric bills by 40 percent.
