Melissa Gray
What is the best place to run the work your company does? On the public cloud? A private cloud? Dedicated servers? Or a combination of platforms. The tools to answer those questions and provide what they call “the best-fit infrastructure” have made Rackspace a global leader in hybrid cloud environments.

Headquartered in San Antonio, it operates data centers on four continents and has been featured on Fortune’s list of 100 Best Companies to Work For.

Melissa Gray, senior director of sustainability for Rackspace, and a Western Michigan University grad, has been invited to be next in the Distinguished Speaker Series, sponsored by Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business. She will present “What We All Want from Work” at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in Room 2000 of Schneider Hall. The talk will be followed by a question-and-answer period.

As director of sustainability, Gray is responsible for guiding Rackspace’s global sustainability strategy and activities. She also acts as the executive sponsor for the company’s resource group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees and their allies.

She joined Rackspace in 2009 and has worked on the development of operational support systems and served as the chief of staff to Rackspace’s CEO, assisting in the development of a multi-year strategic plan.

Gray earned a Bachelor of Science degree from WMU in 1996 then worked for a Fortune 10 firm, helping to transform complex legacy businesses through innovation. She has more than 15 years of business strategy and operations experience, and holds three software patents in the United States and Europe.
