Education readiness programs get financial support in Battle Creek

Education programs offered by 15 local agencies will share $1.2 million per year for three years contributed by United Way of Greater Battle Creek, reports the Battle Creek Enquirer.

Funds are going toward three education-related areas on which the United Way hopes to focus: “School Readiness,” “Support for Adolescent Development” and “Mentoring for Families and Children.”

The United Way also is looking for a group with programs for young readers, but so far funds designated for “School Success for All Children by Third Grade” have not been disbursed.

“Our goal is to be less broad and more deep, more focused” in spending, said Chris Sargent, the local United Way’s president and chief professional officer.

The hope, Sargent said, is that agencies will develop programs that match the United Way’s goals and apply for that funding.
