ChemLink’s green products seal the deal

The construction business is going green. ChemLink, Advanced Architectural Products is leading the way. It was green before green was in demand.Founded 20 years ago, the privately held company has grown from a three-person operation to one with 45 employees, distributors and sales reps across the country.At a time when the U.S. construction industry has been down by 20 to 40 percent in some places, ChemLink has experienced sales growth of 20 percent in Michigan and 15 percent for its North American sales. Longtime employee Gail Nelson attributes much of that growth to the company's unique commitment to creating products that are safe for people and the environment.Equally important is that the sealants, adhesives and similar products the company develops and sells are strong and durable.ChemLink products are made with polyethers. That means they do not give off the toxins that harm the nervous system, kidneys and lungs of people who use them on a regular basis. Third party testing companies have certified the safety of ChemLink products."Contractors have told us for years they like the products because they work and they (the contractors) don't have to worry about being sick when they get old," Nelson says.And the company that prides itself on being contractor driven listens carefully when people in the business tell them what they need or how a product can be improved.At the heart of the operation is owner Phillip Georgeau, a chemist who turns out products one after the other in response to customers' requests. "We've become known as problem-solvers. That's why we've been able to do what we have done," Nelson says.  She says in the early years the company did not tout the environmental soundness of its products because then the prevailing attitude was that if it was green it probably was inferior quality. Now manufacturers are coming to ChemLink to find out more about their product line. Some of the early days were lean. Georgeau worked in the lab to create the products he believed in as his wife, Betty, supported the family on her nurse's salary.The company was built with no grants, loans or outside help. "In many ways, the company has grown solely from the sacrifice of its owners," Nelson says.As the company grew it expanded into three locations, but after an exhaustive search, three years ago it moved under one roof in Schoolcraft. The 50,000-square-foot building houses state-of-the-art labs, offices, manufacturing operations and warehousing. Nelson says the company also is unique in its loyalty to employees. She cites ChemLink's  continued coverage of  employees' health insurance at a time when the cost has driven many employers to drop coverage. NIH grant for $1.83 million goes to Kalamazoo company

A Kalamazoo company working with researchers at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is dedicated to finding treatments for human papillomavirus, or HPV, the cause of most cervical cancer.The National Institutes of Health continues to support that effort. Kalamazoo-based Nanovir and scientists at the University of Missouri–St. Louis have received a $1.83 million, five-year grant. The funding, designated as an ROI grant, is intended to support a specified research project. The grant is called "Biophysics of Drug Interactions with Viral Episomes," and will allow scientists to learn more about the small, circular pieces of DNA known as episomes.Three previous small business grants have specifically have been designated to help NanoVir work on commercialization of the treatments it is pursuing, rather than basic research. This grant, however, will fund studies of the fundamentals of the anti-viral drug necessary to take it to market, says Chris Fisher, director of biology at NanoVir, LLC.The lead investigator for the project, James Bashkin of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and the Center for Nanoscience at UMSL, is collaborating with Fisher."We are working toward an understanding of molecules that were designed to be therapeutic treatments for early intervention against cancer-causing forms of HPV," Bashkin says.Specifically, the researchers are seeking insight into how episomes binding the viral DNA results in its elimination from cells.Bashkin says there are two vaccines on the market that protect against two of the eight known forms of HPV that cause cancer. Further, the vaccines currently available aren't yet used by enough people to have realized their full potential impact. A new drug therapy would treat women who would not benefit from the vaccines.In 2007, the National Cancer Institute estimated that 11,000 women in the United States would be diagnosed with this type of cancer and nearly 4,000 would die from it. There are no drugs currently approved in the United States that specifically treats HPV infection. Cervical cancer is second only to breast cancer among lethal cancers that affect women worldwide.NIH supported the collaborative project through three previous Small Business Technology Transfer grants to NanoVir, one of which is still ongoing. Whirlpool Building Blocks will help in company’s own backyard

This year, the fifth for the program, homes will go up in communities in which Whirlpool Corporation has manufacturing, customer service and administrative offices: Benton Harbor, Mich.; Cleveland, Tenn.; Findlay, Ohio; Williamsburg, Iowa; and Yakima, Wash. Homes also will be built on university campuses to involve college students in the program.Details regarding build dates, university campus build locations and volunteer opportunities will be posted to the Whirlpool brand Web site and the Whirlpool Building Blocks Facebook page when available.In total, 36 Habitat homes have been built with partner families in Nashville, Phoenix, Dallas and Atlanta as part of the Whirlpool Building Blocks program. The program, created in 2006, is an extension of Whirlpool Corporation's support of Habitat for Humanity. Whirlpool has donated more than 10,000 products to Habitat ReStores and has engaged more than 6,000 employee volunteers.The company's commitment to Habitat also includes sponsorship of and participation in Habitat's Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project and the donation of a range and refrigerator to every new Habitat home built in the United States, totaling more than 110,000 appliances to date. The National Center for Food Protection receives $3.8 Million grant

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a $3.8 million, 3-year grant to the National Center for Food Protection this week.The grant supports the national center's work advancing food protection and its role facilitating the exchange of information, generating new ideas and accelerating processes that will enhance the safety of the global food supply."By connecting food safety professionals and scientists, our aim is to influence policies and practices that will advance food protection," says International Food Protection Training Institute President and COO Stephen Benoit. "We are extremely grateful for the support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation as its generosity will enable us to make great strides toward realizing our overarching goal of improving public health."The NCFP will use the grant funds on three intiatives:• training for state and local food protection officials throughout their careers through the International Food Protection Training Institute;• development of new food protection technologies at the Emerging Technology Accelerator; and• the exchange of knowledge and generation of new ideas at a Global Food Protection Symposia.An estimated 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths occur annually in the U.S. due to food pathogens; and about one of every four Americans will develop a food-borne illness each year, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The NCFP, a catalyst for the advancement of food protection, also is a lynchpin in redevelopment efforts for downtown Battle Creek. Data mining company brings 10 to 20 jobs to WMU business and research park

A Houston-based analytic software company that counts among its clients some of the nation's leading firms will open a new office May 1 at Western Michigan University's Business Technology and Research Park.In PolyVista's first major expansion in a decade, the company will open a business development office in Kalamazoo and immediately hire and train 10 to 20 young recruits to become part of a team that works with customers."Our top priority is finding talent," says PolyVista's Jim Willard, who will lead the Kalamazoo office. "I'll be building a team that can focus on finding new homes for our technology."PolyVista provides businesses with access to a search engine that can analyze data and discern patterns and issues. The searches are capable of the same kind of data analysis and text mining used for national security reasons, but are done within the budget constraints most companies can afford, Willard says.Southwest Airlines, for instance, uses PolyVista's text and data-mining analysis tools to enhance the analysis of data in its pilot reporting program. The air conditioning systems and services business Trane uses PolyVista tools for early detection of warranty-related issues. The company can then correct them and pass the information on to its engineering and design teams to avoid problems in future products.PolyVista has a close relationship with Microsoft. The company launched in 1995 with technology developed by scientists from the former Soviet Union. PolyVista's patented search engine also analyzes data in such areas as trade compliance, reliability, marketing and operations; and in finance, energy, transportation, manufacturing and insurance industries.The move to Kalamazoo is a strategic effort to expand PolyVista's base, says Willard, a Michigan native. Although the company was originally focused on expansion in northern Virginia, Michigan proved to be an attractive alternative because of the relatively low cost of doing business in the state and the focus on growth and business outreach.The opportunity to locate in a university community like Kalamazoo also was high on the company's wish list for expansion."Five years ago, this wouldn't have worked for us," Willard says, "but there's been a major culture shift in Michigan and a move away from the legacy thinking that was once dominant. Frame for lithium-ion auto batteries drives business to Mann+Hummel

Battery powered cars are steering growth at Mann+Hummel's Portage location, says Ronald J. Randall, chief operating officer."After going through a tough year, we're in a growth position at our Portage location," Randall says. Work the company does for General Motor's and Toyota has made the difference.Mann+Hummel USA Inc. makes injection-molded plastic parts for the automotive industry. Now it produces a frame to hold lithium-ion batteries that contains coolant. The frame keeps coolant transfer heat away from the batteries.The contract to manufacture modular battery frame assemblies for GM's Electric Vehicle, the Chevy Volt, is expected to generate 200 jobs over five years for Mann+Hummel.At the end of 2009, the company also finished consolidating its operations in South Bend and Portage, bringing about 50 employees from Indiana to its Michigan site. It was very important to the company, Randall says, to retain as many of the South Bend employees and their expertise as possible. There now are about 250 employees, including support staff, at the Portage operation and more will be added this year. The consolidation pushed the company to expand its product distribution and warehousing operation at Midlink Business Park in Comstock Township. Three to four employees could be added this year to the staff of 10 already in place at Midlink.Randall says Mann+Hummel's experience at Midlink has been a positive one. "It's been a great facility for us. It's in the perfect location -- right off the highway and two miles from our facility," Randall says. "They've been very flexible with us with our utilization of space." The business park added four loading docks to the four Mann+Hummel had been using, to better accommodate the company's need to get trucks in and out quickly.  The Mann+Hummel Group currently employs 11,500 people at 41 locations worldwide. The company develops, produces and sells technically complex automotive components such as air filter systems, intake manifold systems, liquid filter systems and cabin filters for the automotive industry, and filter elements for vehicle servicing and repair. Electric vehicle batteries power 50 jobs, $70 million investment in Battle Creek

Toda America, Inc. officially broke ground April 20 in Battle Creek for its first U.S. manufacturing facility to make lithium ion cathode materials used in battery cells for electric drive vehicles.The project is expected to add 50 to 60 direct new high-tech manufacturing jobs, and an estimated 91 indirect jobs, says the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.The new $70 million manufacturing plant, being built on an 18-acre brownfield redevelopment site, is going up in phases. The first phase is scheduled to be in operation by 2011. Phase two is expected to be completed in 2013. By then it will be manufacturing 4,000 tons of finished product per year, as the company works to meet the demand of its battery manufacturing customers located in Michigan and nearby states.  The total sales volume, based on the full capacity operation at the facility, is expected to be around $130 million.This project is supported by a competitive grant awarded to Toda by the DOE under the Recovery Act – Electric Device Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative. The Toda America project also is supported by the State of Michigan and the City of Battle Creek with economic development incentives related to high-tech jobs creation and brownfield redevelopment. Stryker Corp. strikes $3-million deal with a Missouri company

Under an agreement reached with a Missouri company, Stryker Corp. of Kalamazoo will purchase neurosurgery devices and microsurgery tools, the Kalamazoo Gazette reports. The $3 million agreement was announced by Synergetics USA Inc., which the story says has agreed to sell Stryker its Omni line of products. Excerpt: "We believe the new strategic agreement with Stryker will be an important part in expanding our neurosurgery device sales," said David Hable, Synergetics' president and chief executive officer.
