TechniMed, a Troy-based provider of billing for medical practices, has opened a new office in Portage.

The company has recently relocated from an office in Watervliet to a 1,400-square foot space at 5080 Lovers Lane, an office park near other health care industry businesses and medical providers.

The new office has five full-time employees, which transferred from the Watervliet office.

TechniMed made the move to give the staff more room and to be in a better location for to work with businesses from Portage, Kalamazoo and greater Grand Rapids.

The company has had a presence in Southwest Michigan since 2007, when it acquired a failing medical billing service in Watervliet.

TechniMed got its start in 2004. Company founder Pamela Laity and her husband, Bob, were laid off from a medical billing software company, moved to a company where they were providing similar medical billing services and after having great success turning around a number of practices with serious billing issues, they decided to go it on their own.

The business launched from their kitchen table with employees from the previous company who insisted that they be made part of the new venture.

Since then, the company has grown to a staff of 45 across the state.

As TechniMed looks to grow its business and staff in West Michigan, this was a next logical step, says Kelly Quintanilla of TechniMed.
