Project 20/20 hosts discussion on race in Battle Creek

As Battle Creek works to move the community forward, understanding the best ways to create a place where all races and cultures feel respect is part of the total picture.

Toward that end, Project 20/20 will host a community forum Wednesday, May 4, to give people a chance to talk about ways they can work together “to get where we want to be as a community regarding this issue,” says Amanda Lankerd, project manager.

“We as a community need to have conversations like this to move forward and work together to make sure we are aware of the impact of race and diversity on our community,” Lankerd says.

Attendees will be encouraged to make a personal commitment to be more aware of whatever steps they can take to bring about a difference in Battle Creek.

Youth will discuss their personal insights and aspirations for working together. There also will be small group discussions of the presentations.

It’s all part of a week-long focus on race and in Battle Creek taking place May 1-6. The theme is “Remember Our Past; Celebrate Our Progress; and Commit Ourselves to a Better Tomorrow.”

Events throughout the week are intended to stimulate discussion about group and individual attitudes toward race while encouraging inner reflection, Lankerd says.
