Fortune Magazine has named Stryker Corp. one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

This is the first time Stryker, one of Kalamazoo county’s largest employers, has been named to the list.

Stryker came in 68th out of 100. Because employees have the benefit of an opportunity to telecommute, it also placed ninth in the magazine’s ranking.

To put together the list, Great Place to Work Institute conducts an extensive employee survey in corporate America for Fortune magazine. Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on the results of the Institute’s Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to employees’ attitudes about job satisfaction, camaraderie and management’s credibility.

The company’s responses to the Institute’s Culture Audit goes into the final third of the score. It includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, internal communications, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts.

“We believe that we have a very special spirit at Stryker, and it is great to see this spirit acknowledged publicly,” says Stephen P. MacMillan, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Stryker.

Vice president for human resources Mike Rude says the company’s philosophy is to build on employee’s strengths.

Stryker is one of the world’s leading medical technology companies. The Company provides innovative orthopaedic implants as well as state-of-the-art medical and surgical equipment.

This year, 311 companies were surveyed for the Fortune magazine list.
