The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Award given out by Lake Michigan College recognizes people and organizations that promote King’s principles “through their programs, their thoughts, their behavior.”

This year it went to Doug Schaffer, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor, reports the Herald-Palladium.

Excerpt:

“Things like this are less about the individual receiving the award and more about the young men and women that I’ve had the pleasure to serve and work with over the last 15 years here in Benton Harbor,” Schaffer said. “This is a reflection of them more than it is on me.”
