What’s happening: Three West Michigan economic development organizations have forged a partnership in an effort to secure state funding for public-placemaking projects throughout 13 local counties. The alliance seeks suitable projects to apply for the
Revitalization and Placemaking (RAP) program, first launched in 2022 by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
What it is: The RAP program first launched in 2022 in support of Michigan communities as they sought to revitalize commercial centers hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program seeks projects that reinvigorate communities through the rehabilitation and development of vacant and blighted properties, place-based infrastructure projects, and public space improvements.
Who’s who: The Right Place, Inc.,
Lakeshore Advantage, and
Greater Muskegon Economic Development Corporation have partnered in preparation for a regional grant application for the RAP program. The organizations are seeking applications for place-based projects in the 13 counties that make up
Michigan’s Prosperity Region 4, which includes Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, and Ottawa counties.
How it works: The alliance is focusing on public space and place-based infrastructure developments in their search for applicants, citing downtown pocket parks and public art installations as but two of the different projects that could be eligible for funding. Grants are available for up to $500,000, though require a minimum 50 percent match by the applicant.
An online application is available until 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, which also includes more information about the RAP program and application process.
Why it’s important: “Being awarded two successful rounds of funding, we’ve been able to provide support for over 20 public placemaking projects throughout West Michigan,” says Tim Mroz, Senior Vice President of Community Development at The Right Place, Inc. “Projects like these contribute significantly to our region’s quality of life, and we’re excited to lead another regional application for RAP.”
