Statewide program awards $30M in grants to build and rehab more than 700 housing units

What’s happening: Efforts to address Michigan’s housing shortage were bolstered this past Friday, Nov. 1, as the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) announced the first round of grant recipients as part of its MI Neighborhood program. More than $30 million in grants will support the construction and rehabilitation of more than 700 housing units throughout the state.

What it is: The MI Neighborhood program was first announced in April 2024 as part of MSHDA’s larger Statewide Housing Plan, which works to address affordable housing shortages in Michigan communities big and small alike. A total of $60 million was made available to developers, nonprofits, and local units of government in April, with more than $30 million reserved for projects in this first grant round.

The MI Neighborhood program will continue to accept applications until funds are no longer available, more information of which is available via the MSHDA website.

What’s coming: The construction and rehabilitation of 716 housing units, both for sale and for rent, will be supported in communities throughout the state – and many of them in rural areas. A total of 15 public amenities round out the list of grantees. More than 75 grants have been reserved for a wide variety of projects, from the rehabilitation of 20 housing units in Calhoun County (Albion Economic Development Corporation, $472,000) to the construction of 6 new housing units in Charlevoix County (Northern Homes Community Development Corporation, $590,000).

A complete list of winning projects can be found online via the MSHDA website.

Why it’s important: “Our success in identifying and awarding housing projects for MI Neighborhood shows that we are making real strides to improve Michigan’s housing landscape,” says Amy Hovey, CEO and Executive Director of MSHDA. “I’m proud that we’re supporting projects in every region. We’re going to keep listening to our local and regional housing leaders and implementing solutions that meet their goals and the priorities of the Statewide Housing Plan.”
