Kal-Haven Trail part of rail-to-trail conversion that makes Michigan No. 1
The 33.55 miles of the Kal-Haven trail from Kalamazoo to South Haven are among 2,478 miles of trail in the state that make Michigan No. 1 in rail-to-trail conversion nationwide, reports MLive.
What pushed Michigan ahead was largely a commitment by the state to pursue building the trails, the story says. The trails have been a key component of the state recreation plan since the late 1980s.

Michigan recently became No. 1 in the nation with 2,478 miles on the ground and open. Those are the figures shown by the national Rails to Trails Conservancy. Minnesota is a close second with 2,309 open miles of trail. Wisconsin is third with 1,788 miles. Wyoming and Utah are at the bottom of the list. Each has 1 mile.
In all, there are 1,683 rail trails in the United States. They total 19,872 open miles. But another 9,232 miles is in progress, including 394 miles in Michigan.
