Longtime volunteer helps out with fish fry

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It takes 90 pounds of catfish and 30 pounds of perch to make a fish fry for the Ecumenical Senior Center each month.

Emma Powell, 87, is the primary cook for the event, reports the Kalamazoo Gazette.

Excerpt:

“I am glad the Lord has blessed me,” said Powell, 87. “So many people my age are flat on their backs in a nursing home.”

Aaron Cantrell, a previous interim director of the center, said that if you were to meet Powell, you’d think she’s 60 years old.

“I wish that when I’m her age, I would have her spirit of helping and youthfulness,” Cantrell said. “She’s the one that goes the extra mile.”
