Northside native Jonathan Yarbrough has been named executive director of the Northside Association for Community Development. Seen as a "connector, bridge-builder, and advocate," he plans to "move the needle" on the neighborhood’s legacy while driving community-focused growth.
Following the recent gun deaths of two Kalamazoo youth, the Northside Ministerial Alliance organized a Dominion Walk for peace and against gun violence that drew over 250. “There’s more of us in the community than there are shooters, and so if we make our voices loud and do what we’re supposed to, I think we can make it better.”
Shonda Buchanan, poet, memoirist, and Western Michigan University Professor of English, returned home to Kalamazoo where her family has deep roots. Her upcoming book, "The Lost Songs of Nina Simone" will be released in May 2025.

“Growing up, everyone had asthma… we used to collect inhalers like they were Pokémon,” recalls Tyler Dancer while walking through his Northside neighborhood in early September. Envirosuite meters throughout the neighborhood now monitor hydrogen sulfide levels. Residents have filed a class action suit and formed a group, Kalamazoo Parents for Clean Air, to address the harmful impacts of industrial pollution.

The goal is $50,000 to help with renovations to 26 Fremont Street in Battle Creek.
